SPD is the abbreviation of ‘Scuola Politecnica di Design’ / ‘Polytechnic School of Design’. It was founded in Milan in 1954 and it is the first graduate school in Italy to provide education on design disciplines. The school building includes classrooms, independent study spaces, fully equipped computer rooms, printing labs, a library with resources for innovative and recycled materials, and a cafeteria. The lower floor houses modelling workshops and the main conference room; the tower houses seminar rooms, computer labs with Mac and PC equipment and special software applications, a photography studio, exhibition spaces, offices and technical spaces.

IULM University campus has been collaborating closely with the SPD since 2011 to develop joint academic programs. Students also have access to nearby IULM University facilities such as the library and canteen. There are also bookstores and recreation areas around the campus.

One Year Courses

One-year courses last one academic year between October and July. Attendance is mandatory and full-time attendance is required for in-class exercises and institution visits. These courses aim to provide basic training on products and designs. This aim is achieved through a well-designed curriculum that includes the necessary methodological tools.

The training has various differences according to the chosen field and they aim to provide general and technical field education, to develop students’ understanding of design, and to bring them to a level where they can produce projects that can have a global impact. The courses taught at the Scuola Politecnica di Design are directly related to the requirements and skills needed for the Master year, which is an ideal continuation of this course.

Admission requirements for one-year courses are: undergraduate diploma, providing examples of previous work – portfolio –, transcript, application form, a letter of intent of at least 20 lines, and a medium level of English proficiency.

Master Programs

Scuola Politecnica di Design includes a period of 15 months. In this program, which corresponds to 60 ECTS credits, students take various courses in the department they are accepted to. In the last three months of the master’s program, students are required to participate in an internship program in order to improve their working skills in professional companies or companies and to contribute to their careers.
