What is the IMAT Exam?

It is one of the exams for admission to Italian Universities applied by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research.

If you are successful in this IMAT exam, which is organized for entrance to medical faculties and dentistry, you are entitled to 6 years of university education.

There are 13 English-language medical schools in Italy. 12 of these schools provide medical education and 1 of them provides dentistry education. The university that provides dentistry education taught in English is the University of Siena.

General Information About IMAT Exam

IMAT Exam Content and Question Distribution

The curriculum of the IMAT Exam, which consists of Logic, General Culture, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics parts, is almost identical to the curriculum in high schools. So students do not have excessive difficulty while studying.

Scoring and Examination Rules | What is IMAT Exam?

  • +1.5 points are given for a correct answer, -0.4 points for an incorrect answer and 0 points for an unanswered question.
  • A candidate who answers all 60 questions correctly in the exam gets 90 full points
  • Each candidate must score a minimum of 20 points to obtain a place in a university.
  • Nothing other than a black ballpoint pen is allowed into the exam hall.

Examination Place and Fee | What is IMAT Exam?

You do not need to go to Italy for the IMAT Exam, you have the opportunity to take this exam directly in your home country in certain places.

  1. You can take the test in your home country or in Italy.
  2. The exam is held once a year
  3. Only valid for English taught medical schools in Italy
  4. The exam grade is also only valid for the year of application.
  5. The examination fee is € 130.

Things you should have with you on the day of the exam

  1. Exam registration certificate and a document showing that the exam fee has been paid.
  2. Passport (The passport you used to register for the exam)
  3. Black Pen
  4. You are not allowed to enter the exam hall with any electronic devices.

Who can take IMAT exam?

In order to take the exam, you must pre-register and register also pay the pre-registration and registration fee. In order to take the exam, only your personal information is required.

To list the application requirements for IMAT; to be a high school graduate, to have successfully completed the pre-registration process, to have passed the threshold of  university entrance exams held in your home country and of course anyone who pays the IMAT fee can successfully take the exam.

Additional information that should be known is that IELTS certificate is not required to take IMAT exam.

Where and When is IMAT exam is held?

The exam is held once a year in the second week of September each year. The application for the exam is made in July. Pre-registration and consular procedures must be done until May at the latest.

Those who do not complete pre-registration, consular equivalence procedures and final registration procedures cannot take the exam. University preferences are made during registration, before the exam. Your exam location is usually the university of your first choice. Apart from this, you can take the exam in many parts of the world.

When is the 2023 IMAT exam?

The date of the 2023 IMAT exam has been set as 13th of September 2022, after taking the exam, you can access your results between 10 to 20 October. Students who have a successful score in the exam can start the registration process at the university they will study with other required documents.

Which departments is the IMAT exam taken for?

The IMAT exam, which is generally taken to study medicine in English at public universities in Italy, can also be taken by students for dentistry education. In health branches other than medicine and dentistry departments, the exam is generally not required or it may have a different prerequisite.

How much is the exam fee?

The current fee for the IMAT exam in 2023 is 130 Euros. The exam fee is paid in July when the application dates start, in this month students can follow the process and apply online.

Is an IELTS or TOEFL certificate required for IMAT?

There is no requirement such as IELTS or TOEFL English language proficiency certificate in the application process for the exam, students can apply for this exam if they are high school graduates. However, documents such as language proficiency may be asked among other prerequisites in the universities they will apply to.

Is the IMAT exam online, how many times a year and in which countries?
